Celebrate National Walking Month this May with the National Trust
Whether you’re a keen hiker, weekend wanderer, or simply enjoy short social strolls, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved in National Walking Month in May with friends and family.
Join one of the National Trust’s guided walks, or take your pick of the numerous trails and routes around Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

From sheltered woodland and historic landscapes, to lakeside strolls and picturesque parkland, there's plenty of space to escape the routine, connect with nature and enjoy the outdoors.
Canons Ashby
Canons Ashby is a tranquil Tudor manor house set within rare, terraced gardens, shaped by the legacy of the “antient” Dryden family. Visitors can relax with refreshments in the Tea Room, browse the Gift Shop, and enjoy open outdoor spaces where the whole family can explore.
To mark National Walking Month, visitors are invited to enjoy the great outdoors with a series of guided countryside walks running at Canons Ashby from May to October. Taking place on the third Thursday of each month, the 6-mile walks offer a chance to explore scenic surroundings, take in stunning views, and enjoy fresh air alongside experienced volunteer walking guides.
The walks run from 10:00am –12:30pm and are free to attend.
Lyveden
Set in the quiet countryside of Northamptonshire, Lyveden is a remarkable unfinished Elizabethan project created by Sir Thomas Tresham. The site blends moats, terraced gardens, and a mysterious symbol-filled lodge. Visitors can round off their exploration with a light lunch or a sweet treat in the café and browse for hidden gems in the second-hand bookshop.
As part of National Walking Month, visitors are invited to discover the beauty of the Northamptonshire countryside with a special programme of guided walks at Lyveden.
Led by experienced Guided Walk leaders, these monthly social walks explore a variety of scenic routes across the surrounding landscape. Designed to be welcoming and sociable, the walks offer participants the chance to enjoy fresh air, take in picturesque views, and connect with others in a relaxed setting. Routes vary in length, ensuring there is something for a range of abilities.
On 10 May, walkers can take part in an extended guided route to Pilton and back, covering approximately seven miles. The walk will include a midway break for lunch, and participants are encouraged to bring a packed lunch or purchase takeaway items from the on-site café before departure.
The walk times vary from month to month. Head to the website to book.
