Northampton Carnival will once again be held virtually this year and plans are already in place to make it bigger and better than last year’s online event.

The free event is in its seventeenth year and despite a difficult year last year, organisers are keen to give residents something to look forward to.

This year’s multicultural, community event planned for June 12, will focus on the theme of ‘one love, one world, one summer’, as the lockdown restrictions are lifted.

A spokeswoman for the Northampton Carnival Arts Consortium said: “We are looking positively ahead as we transition into the spring season and what it will inspire.

“In the first instance we are planning for another spectacular virtual event.

“With the experience of last year’s first run, we are well equipped to hit the ground running this year with a bigger and wider presence.

“It’s been a challenging couple of years for everyone, we all need something to look forward to, so the theme this year we feel is totally apt as it gives hope, as well as opportunities for everyone to come together regardless of age, culture or status to get involved.”

The carnival will once again include a selection of free online workshops to help with ideas to design a costume, headpiece or backpack made up of affordable props or recycled household items.

Plans are also being made for an online IT/social media workshop for those who are interested in producing their own videos.

As part of the festivities, the consortium is also looking for established or up and coming musicians who miss performing.

They are invited to send an mp3 or video clip of a performance and could then be offered the opportunity to record a set for a carnival day slot.
