We all know that a Christmas is going to be very different this year. While desperately hoping that everything will soon be back to “normal” again there are concerns that things might get worse before they get better.

For those who have lost loved ones during the year, their Christmas will also be a time of grief, sharing memories of happier times, and another point of adjustment to life without someone they love. Many will also have suffered the trauma of being unable to visit their loved ones in their final days or gather with family and friends for a traditional funeral and celebration of life.

The church ‘family’ at Abington Avenue URC in Northampton, has itself suffered the loss of seven of its members during the period. The church is now Inviting its neighbors – members of the local community – who themselves have lost a loved one during the past year to join with it by placing a small visual memorial for their loved ones, in the area outside the church, of flowers, ribbons, pictures, family names, letters, biographies, and any kind of tribute (ideally weatherproofed) as appropriate.

These could be attached to the railings outside the church. Only a small gesture, perhaps, but an opportunity for the church to share its condolences with all in the Abington area – those of all faiths and none – at this particularly difficult time

The church will record all the names and hang them on its prayer tree. This will be placed in the foyer where it is visible from the street.

Church members will be praying for the families and loved ones of each person during Sunday morning services which are currently streamed live on Facebook at 10.30am (FB Abington Avenue United Reformed Church) where there is also a catch-up facility.

Anyone who feels that prayer is not appropriate for their loved ones may put a note with their tribute or phone the church office on 01604 604623.
