Jim Mallinder is hopeful Luther Burrell will return to training early next week after being ruled out of Saints' clash with Sale Sharks.

Burrell was set to line up at inside centre, but was forced to withdraw due to ‘a quad strain’.

Harry Mallinder came in to play at 12 and once again impressed as Saints earned a fine 26-11 victory at Franklin’s Gardens on Saturday.

But with big games against the likes of Exeter Chiefs, Harlequins and Wasps on the horizon, Saints will be eager to have Burrell available.

And Mallinder said: “He’s got a bit of a quad strain. He’s had it for a few weeks, but he went down to England training and made it a bit worse.

“We were hopeful that he could come through, but we had to make a late change and thankfully Harry came in and played okay.”

And when asked whether Burrell could be fit to face Exeter at Sandy Park on Sunday, Mallinder said: “Without a doubt.

“It’s not a massive injury and hopefully he’ll be back training early in the week.”
