The result leaves Town in serious relegation trouble, and means Oxford retain their four-point advantage over Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s men.

Town did have their chances, particularly in an enterprising first-half, but Chris Long fluffed his lines on a couple of occasions.

The Cobblers were off the pace after the break and indeed, Oxford could have pinched it at the end, but Wes Thomas hit the post with a close-range header.

Both sides had to settle for a point, which is far more useful to managerless Oxford, with the Cobblers stuck in 19th place in league one, just two points above the relegation zone.

All the teams below them have at least one game in hand on Town, who return to action at the weekend when they travel to 16th placed Blackpool.

Chron photographer Kirsty Edmonds was at Sixfields on Saturday to capture the action from the Oxford United clash, and here is a selection of her images.
