Courtney Lawes cleared to carry on playing for Saints

Flanker Courtney Lawes is free to play for Saints after he was cleared following a citing complaint following last Saturday's England versus Wales clash in the Six Nations at Twickenham.

Lawes was reported by the independent citing commissioner Peter Ferguson following England's victory, with it being alleged the Saints man had infringed Law 9.13 and made a dangerous tackle on Wales' Alun Wyn Jones in the first half.

At the hearing in Dublin on Thursday, Lawes accepted he had committed an act of foul play but he did not accept that it warranted a red card, and the committee agreed.

A statement on the RFU website read: "The Disciplinary Committee, which comprised David Hurley (Ireland), Sarah Smith (Scotland) and Donal Courtney (Ireland), heard evidence and submissions from Lawes and his legal counsel, Richard Smith QC respectively (as well as from Six Nations’ legal representative).

"The Disciplinary Committee found that Lawes had committed an act of foul play (an infringement of Law 9.13) but not such that it had warranted a red card, so the citing complaint was not upheld.

"Lawes is free to resume playing immediately."

Saints are due to return to action next Saturday when they host Wasps in the Gallagher Premiership, but the match must be in doubt due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

As yet, there has been no official statements from the RFU or the Gallagher Premiership on their plans with regards to the competition going ahead as normal, or being suspended.
