Rowing: National Schools Regatta
Cameron McKenzie and Tom Bryan once again proved they are one of the best under 16 crews in GB.
Competing at the National Schools regatta, which is probably the most prestigious event for juniors, Tom and Cameron finished 5th out of a field of 34. Racing over a 2000m course at Dorney Lake, the London Olympic venue, the boys excelled in the time trial to finish in the top 8 and earn themselves a place in the A final.
In an exciting final the Shanklin and Sandown crew took an early lead with Tom and Cameron near the back of the field. The Northampton crew picked up the pace after 500m slowly improving their position through the middle part of the race and were closing in on 4th placed Windsor Boys School as they approached the line. Finishing 5th just 6 seconds adrift of the 2nd place crew from Exeter, gives the double a real boost as they prepare for selection trials for the upcoming GB vs France International in July.
Teagan Smith, competing in the Championship event for under 18 single sculls had a challenging weekend having to compete 4 times over the 2000m course. In the time trial on Saturday morning, she finished 11th of the 38 entries. After winning the repechage and coming 5th in the semi-final, Teagan eventually raced in the B final where she led to 500m, but the 3 previous races had taken their toll and she slipped back to finish 5th. As one of the younger competitors, at just 16 years old, this was an impressive result and bodes well for the future.
