New track record secures pole for Hamilton in Hungary

Lewis Hamilton smashed the track record three times to claim his 91st pole position for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix.

The six-time world champion set a blistering time of 1:13.447 to take pole ahead of Valtteri Bottas in the other Mercedes by just under two tenths of a second.

Lance Stroll confirmed the pace of the Racing Point by taking third spot ahead of his team-mate Sergio Perez, who brushed aside rumours he was to be replaced at the Silverstone team at the end of the season by Ferrari outcast Sebastian Vettel.

The German outqualified team-mate Charles Leclerc as the Scuderia struggled to match the pace of the frontrunners in fifth and sixth but the shock of the session was the lack of speed in the Red Bull cars.

Max Verstappen, who narrowly missed out on victory at the Hungaroring in 2019, could only set the seventh fastest time, while Alex Albon missed out on Q3 altogether and will start 13th.
