CRICKET SPECIAL: Kislingbury Temperance hold nerve to claim win double and set up Finals Day chance

Kislingbury Temperance booked a place at Finals Day of the Northants Cricket League T20 Championship with a win double on Saturday.

Fourth place and a semi-final place was up for grabs on the final day of group action, and it was the villagers who did the business.

They first beat Loddington & Mawsley by 76 runs and that set up what was a winner-takes-all showdown with fellow contenders Overstone Park.

And although the weather did its best to intervene, it was Kislingbury who secured the success to confirm a fourth-place finish and a place in Sunday's Finals Day at Geddington CC.

They will take on group winners Peterborough in the semi-finals, with the other tie seeing second-placed Finedon Dolben take on Stony Stratford.

Against Loddington, Ben Swingler-Brown was the star man for Kisl as he hit an unbeaten 72 to steer his side to 165 for six in their 20 overs.

That was too many for struggling Loddington, who were restricted to 89 for five.

Overstone Park were also victorious in their opening fixture, seeing off the previously unbeaten Stony Stratford by five wickets.

Heet Amin hit 65 not out as Stony posted 134 for five, but an unbeaten 70 from Ram Patel powered Park to victory at 137 for five.

That set up the decider against Kislingbury, and Overstone were up against it as they could only post 102 for eight in their 20 overs.

Northants youngster Tiaan Louw took two for 34 and Steelbacks veteran Rob Keogh two for 13, while Patel's 23 was the top score for Park.

After rain, Kislingbury were set a revised target and got home at 69 for two thanks to 31 not out from Alex Mitchell.

Elsewhere, Peterborough clinched top spot thanks to a 59-run win over Rushden & Higham Town.

Nicholas Green hit 53 and Sulaiman Saleem 45 as Posh posted 204 for six, despite the best bowling efforts of Jack White (4-41).

Chanaka Ruwansiri then hit 69 in reply, but there was little support as Ruturaj Kale snared five for nine to bowl Rushden out for 145.

Peterborough's second fixture of the day was abandoned after they had made 139 for five (Josh Smith 51no) against Finedon.

Finedon had earlier cemented their Finals Day spot with a 10-wicket thrashing of Rushden, who were restricted to 87 for eight before Sean Davis's unbeaten 50 saw his side home.

Old Northamptonians had did their best to keep alive their hopes of qualifying with a five-wicket win over Oundle Town early in the day, but it wasn’t enough and their second fixture was then abandoned with Geddington 87 for one (Jack Parker 51no).

Against Oundle, ONs did well to overhaul their rivals’ 181 for eight (Sam Batten 69no), with Shivasurya Arun Krishna hitting 69 not out and Anshul Poothi 44 not out to see their side home with two balls to spare after Conor Craig (4-34) had reduced them to 65 for five.

Elsewhere, Jack Lees was in the runs again for Geddington (155-5), hitting 76 as they beat Oundle Town (154-7) by one run, and Loddington’s miserable campaign was completed as they were bowled out for just 55 to lose by 75 runs to Stony.

This Sunday sees Geddington host the T20 Finals Day, with Peterborough taking on Kislingbury in the first semi-final at 10am, and Finedon then doing battle with Stony at 1.15pm.

The final is scheduled to start at 4.20pm.

Before then, Saturday sees the long-awaited opening round of matches in the NCL Premier Division, with champions Finedon Dolben hosting Geddington.

The other games see Kislingbury entertain Stony Stratford, ONs host Oundle Town, Loddington go to Peterborough and Rushden & Higham welcome Overstone Park.

Kettering Town's 100 per cent winning run in NCL Division One came to a shuddering halt on Saturday as the morning leaders were hammered by 143 runs at Horton House.

Town had won three out of three to start the campaign, but were on the back foot as Horton posted a formidable 236 for nine, with Finlay Moffat hitting a brilliant 102.

For Kettering, Arun Bains claimed four for 48, but with rain around the total was to prove too daunting as they were restricted to 125 for six in reply, despite Guven Kooner's unbeaten 47.

The defeat allowed Barby to take over at the top of the table by a single point thanks to their 65 run win over Burton Latimer.

Niall Ferry claimed four for 28 for Latimer as Barby were bowled out for 170, but that proved to be more than enough as the home side were rushed out for 105, despite 59 from Chris Harrison.

Zachary Wenham bagged four for 14 for Barby.

Desborough Town are still looking for a first win of the season, but they must have thought they were in with a shot when a stunning innings of 142 from Wayne Steed powered them to 253 all out against Brixworth.

Unfortunately for Borough, it wasn't enough as Brixworth responded with 257 for five to claim a five-wicket success thanks to 59 not out from Alex Lacey and 50 not out from Rob Glaysher.

Wollaston are fifth after they proved to be too strong for Northampton Saints.

Christopher Perry produced a remarkable spell of four for five as Saints were dismissed for 131, with Elliot Patterson top scoring with 40.

Hal Robinson then made a crucial 79 as Wollaston eased home at 132 for four.

Wellingborough Town are fourth and just a point off the leaders after they cruised to a five-wicket success against Weekley & Warkton.

Weekley were bowled out for 116 and Thomas Howes then smacked 57 not out to see Borough to victory.

Thrapston scored an emphatic 99-run victory against rock-bottom Peterborough Town IIs to secure a second win of the summer.

Owen Whiteman cracked an unbeaten 67 and Cai Williams 47 as Thrapston posted 226 for nine, before Ross Coles' four for 30 helped bowl Posh out for just 127.

Irchester edged a thrilling low-scoring contest against Brixworth IIIs by one wicket to maintain their early promotion push in NCL Division Eight.

The high-flyers probably would have thought a win was in the bag at the halfway point after they had dismissed Brixworth for just 83, with Sandeep Parmar securing four for 20 with the ball.

But their reply was far from plain sailing, and in the end they were indebted to 12 not out from last man Krunal Patel to get them over the line at 86 for nine - having at one point been 36 for one!

Patel and Kevinkumar Kaushikbhai (7no) put on a crucial 19 runs for the last wicket to rescue their side from 67 for nine and steer them to victory, as David Reith claimed four for 12.

Grange Park stay a point clear at the top of the pile after they eased past MK Air IIs by six wickets, while Burton Latimer IIIs are third, just two points off the top, ater they saw off North Crawley by three wickets.

Crawley scored a useful 210 for four, but Richard McGrenaghan then saw his side home with an excellent 101, with support coming from Robert Lovegrove who made 45.

Wellingborough Old Grammarians claimed a second win of the season as they cruised to an eight-wicket win over fellow mid-table side St Michael's.

Shafeek Shamsudheen made 47 to help the Northampton side to 166 for nine, but that target proved to be a walk in the park for OGs as they coasted to 167 for two thanks to 51 from Rudath Kapugeekiyana and an unbeaten 48 from Andrew Brierley.

Great Oakley IIs are the early pacesetters in the NCL Division 11 North after they secured an eight-wicket triumph over Rushden & Higham Town IIIs in a rain-affected encounter on Saturday.

Rushden were restricted to 167 for nine, and after the weather intervened Oakley than cantered to their revised target of 130 for two thanks to 58 from Owen Bell.

Raunds Town have also won two out of two and sit third after they saw off Burton Latimer IVs by 54 runs.

Jay Hawkes top-scored with 58 and Daniel Piggott made 56 as Raunds made 219 for eight in their innings.

And despite an unbeaten 50 from Latimer skipper Jon Dunham and 44 from Stanley Nicholls, they came up short in their reply at 165 for five.

Finedon Dolben IVs notched a welcome first win of the summer as they beat Thrapston IIIs in another game affected by the weather.

Darren Moors scored 59 and Matthew Bicknell 49 not out as Finedon tallied 159 for six, and with Thrapston then set 87 to win, they had a go but fell short at 75 for two to lose by 11 runs.

S & L Corby IIIs also got off the mark for the season as the saw off Wellingborough Town IIIs by 44 runs - a result that leaves the latter sitting second from bottom in the table.

Sandeep Kumar crafted 85 as S&L set a target of 186 for nine, with Avi Bhundia bagging four for 46, but despite 56 not out from Akhil Joseph, Borough were well short on 142 all out.

Pytchley are rock bottom and winless after two matches after they had a day to forget.

The villagers were bowled out for just 44 to lose by 185 runs to Brigstock IIs, who had set a decent total thanks to Jamie Mills thumping 86.
