CRICKET SPECIAL: D-day in the race for T20 Finals Day as Anderson ton boosts Borough

The race for a place at the Northants Cricket League T20 Championship Finals Day is wide open with two more rounds of fixtures to play.

Stony Stratford and Peterborough Town have both won four out of four to sit poudly at the top with 12 points out of 12, while third-placed Finedon Dolben are just a point further back after three wins and a tie.

It is underneath those three that things get really interesting, with Oundle Town and Overstone Park on six points and then sixth-placed Kilsingbury Temperance just a point back.

All three will be bidding to clinch that fourth place in the table in Saturday's final fixtures.

Last Saturday's matches saw two more wins for a strong Stony side.

First they hammered Rushden & Higham Town by 10 wickets after restricting their opponents to 75 for nine, and they then eased past a star-studded Kislingbury Temperance side in their second outing.

Kislingbury included current Northants players Rob Keogh, Gus Miller and Tiaan Louw in their line-up, as well as former County skipper Alex Wakely, but they were beaten by 24 runs by Stony.

Steven Plant hit 45 as Stony totalled 153 for seven in their 20 overs, and although Zaakir Khawaja hit 52 for Kisl, they were bowled out for 129, with Andy Marston taking four for 17

Khawaja also hit 52 earlier in the day as Kislingbury beat Geddington by 64 runs.

Khawaja top-scored while Miller (29) and Wakely (30) offered support as Kisl made 190 for eight, and that was too many for Geddington who were then restricted to 126 for four despite 41 from Matt Taylor.

Louw took two for 23 for the winners.

Geddington's other match saw them lose by five wickets to Finedon Dolben.

Jack Lees, who blasted a century the previous weekend, was again in the runs, hitting 61 as Geddington totalled 144 for three, but Daniel Bendon then steered Finedon to 148 for five with an unbeaten 56.

Finedon were also five-wicket winners as they eased past Overstone Park in their early match.

Park made 151 for seven, but it wasn't sufficient as Sean Davis hit 53 and Drew Brierley 42 to see Dolben to 151 for five and the win.

Overstone were four-run winners against Old Northamptonians, with the latter enduring a blank day as they were also edged out by Peterborough Town.

Anshul Poothi cracked 53 as ONs were bowled out for 142, with Ruturaj Kale bagging five for 14, but Posh got over the line with three wickets to spare as Josh Smith's 67 steered them to 143 for seven.

In their other game, Peterborough were comfortable 56-run winners over neighbours Oundle Town.

Nicholas Green made 52 and Zeeshan Manzoor 51 as Borough posted 169 for seven, and Oundle were then rolled over for just 113.

Oundle had no problem with making runs in their other tie as they thrashed Loddington & Mawsley by 55 runs.

Josh Smith hit 52 and Bill Amas 45 as Oundle piled on 208 for three, and although James Esler responded with a well-made 66, Loddington were well short on 153 for four.

It has been a miserable tournament so far for Loddington, who sit bottom of the group table having lost four out of four.

Their other encounter saw them lose by seven wickets to Rushden & Higham, who secured their first win of the competition.

Loddington could only make 110 for eight, and Chanaka Ruwansiri then smacked 61 as Rushden coasted to 113 for three.

League round-up…

Kettering Town are the early pacesetters in the NCL Division One.

They made it three wins out of three to start the season as they proved to be too strong for a Burton Latimer side that began the day level on points with Kettering.

Mark Watkins scored 62 and Aditya Sharma 50 as Kettering posted 254 for eight in their 50 overs.

Scott Sanders then did what he could for Latimer as he made an excellent 71, but they fell short as they were bowled out for 223, with Theo Brooks taking four for 34.

Jehu Anderson scored a brilliant century as Wellingborough produced a strong performance to see off Peterborough by 62 runs.

Anderson led the way for his side, hammering 105, as Wellingborough totalled 253 for seven in their 50 overs. Serious support came from Ryan Arnold, who made 88.

That target proved to be too stiff for Posh, who were bowled out for 191.

Michael Evans made 48 in Weekley & Warkton’s 152 all out, and that was key as they bowled out Saints for 144.

Hal Robinson and Christopher Perry were the stars of the show as Wollaston hammered Desborough Town by nine wickets.

Perry stepped up first to do the damage with the ball, taking four for 17 as Desborough were dismissed for 152.

That proved to be no problem for Wollaston as Robinson smashed 83 to see his side to 155 for one.

It was bad day for Thrapston as they were bowled out for 82 to lose by 153 runs to Barby, with Will Hamilton snaring six for 30.

Wellingborough Indians are up to third in Division Two after they secured a 38-run win over Rothwell Town, who have dropped to eighth.

Jiga Patel was the main man with the bat for Indians, as his 57 was the backbone of their 211 all out.

Rothwell eventually fell short as they were bowled out for 173 (Ajaykumar Manivannan 4-30).

Wollaston IIs were one-run winners at Heyford in a thriller. Matthew Jones hit 77 and Paul Wilkinson 51 as Wollaston made 213 for seven, with Heyford then falling just short at 212 for nine.

Alex Holmes hit a superb unbeaten century as Spencer Bruerne secured a remarkable three-run win over Brixworth IIs in Division Three.

Holmes hammered a stunning 169 not out from just 127 balls, hitting 31 fours and three sixes, to power his side to 262 all out.

Brixworth made a brilliant effort and very nearly got over the line thanks to 89 from Rory Green and 49 from Toby Haxby, but they were bowled out for 259 when Tom Farebrother was dismissed by Charlie Higham.

Patrick Bright was the ton-up hero for Podington as they thumped Old Northamptonians IIIs by 112 runs in Division Four.

Bright hit a superb 104 and Charlie Saxby 52 as third-placed Podington rattled up 262 for six in their 50 overs, with Phil Monkman claiming four for 44

ONs were never in the hunt in reply and were bowled out for 150.

Northampton Saints IIs proved too strong for S&L Corby, who were bowled out for 175 (Joe Thompson 4-41). Saints eased to 176 for three, with Elliot Patterson hitting 69 and James Anthony 50.
