Carp keep feeding as match anglers get baked on banks in record-book temperatures

Match carp catch weights have been soaring on many venues, for some, despite daytime temperatures reached record book levels.

Typically Meadowlands was in belting form for its afternoon midweeker with the top three totaling well over a third of ton…as all but four of the 18 fishing topped 100lb – and even two of them them had weights of 90lb-plus!

Firmly out front, Mick Bull won with 302-12, mostly on short-poled pellet, as Josh Palmer followed with 270-10 from the margins with Trev Mold ‘best of the rest’ with 213-14, also caught fishing close in.

The lowest section winning weight was 178lb.

On a different front altogether, decent sized river bream have been showing, and during daylight hours too.

Upper Ouse fan Karl Seidler had several in a recent trip ‘upstream of Bedford’, with a 7-6 the heaviest of his trip. Some are showing in the Olney area, too.

Cotton Outcasts’ do on Peatling A ended with Dave Haddon setting a new PB match weight with 322lb and Paul Scrivener also netting a new PB of 204-2 as Vince Battams made the frame again, this time with 107-4.

Their next outing, to Holly Farm’s Gils Lake, was topped by Steve Johnson on 129-10 as Paul Jackson landed 120-3. Third again went to Battams, this time with 107lb.

Splinters have continued to ‘empty’ Peatling, match after match with Sunday’s session on C going to Mark Forbes as he notched a clear win with 243-7 – 50 odd pounds clear of runner-up Dave Griffiths with 187lb. Andy Forbes followed with 166-9.

An outing to Peatling E went to Andy Forbes’ 216-6 with Mark Forbes on 150-2 and Dave Griffiths 138–9, while the club’s session on Plough & Harrow ended with a 214-7 win for Trev Griffiths as Kev Elliott netted 175-1 and Eddie Kelly 154-15.

Osprey ventured out to Twin Lakes where only three of their line-up caught less than 50lb.

Carp, tench, chub, barbel and perch made-up the weights as Andy Knell topped with 91-9 – well clear of Ray Radon’s 79-8. John Bazely followed with 75-8 – 10lb clear of son, Andy.

Sunday’s Castle Ashby Open on Grendon was a stroll in the park for Paul Robinson as he cruised home with 67-14 – mostly carp. Next up was Ian Pretty with 19-12 as Neil Russell put 14-10 on the scales.

Flore & Brockhall found themselves being ‘cooked’ on Hollands Lake at Flecknoe where Brian Johnson won with 54-8 as Terry Smith had a creditable 46-6 and Gill Corns 34-4.

Newport’s latest Ouse match, at Sherington, went to Mark Pollard with 11-6 of silvers with Kevin Osborne next in line on 8-6 – both in the Abbey pits area – while, downstream, Dave Tebbutt grabbed third with 8-4.

Nene opted for the Ouse at Stony Stratford, which is deepish and well-shaded, where Mick Goodridge won with 7-12 of roach and perch as Rob Pottinger took second with 5-14, and Simon Cordingley made third with 4-8.
