Wilder: Cobblers fans believing '˜this could be our year'

Thanks to what has been a stunning season so far, the support has gradually been growing over the past few months, with Sixfields now selling out regularly for home fans and the numbers of travelling support, at times, remarkable for a league two club.

That away following will reach a different level next Tuesday night when more than 6,000 Cobblers fans will make the short trip south for the FA Cup third round replay at Milton Keynes Dons.

That’s more fans than can actually squeeze into Sixfields.

The prize of a home tie against Barclays Premier League champions Chelsea in the fourth round is obviously what has sparked such an amazing amount of Town fans to hit the road to stadiummk, but Wilder believes there is more to it than that.

He says the backing the club is getting it is down to the style of football the team is playing, the consistency his players are showing, and the results they are producing.

And the supporters are, quite simply, loving what they are seeing and believing ‘this could be our season’.

“I believe the supporters are really believing in us, they are seeing what we are about,” said Wilder.

“The games here at Sixfields have all been sold out and we are taking 6,000 punters to Milton Keynes, we have taken some great away followings.

“Even on Tuesday night, to take 250-300 down to Plymouth on a midweek night when people have to get up for work the next day, and have to finish early to get down there is a fabulous effort.

“I think they are believing that ‘this could be our season’, and they are backing us in numbers.”

Around 1,000 Cobblers fans are expected to travel to east London on Saturday for the Sky Bet League Two clash at struggling Dagenham & Redbridge, and Wilder is hoping for another good day at Vauxhall Road.

It has certainly been a happy hunting ground for the Cobblers in recent times, and Wilder said: “I am sure the fans will back us in numbers at Dagenham, and I always think it is a good away ground and we have had some decent results there.

“The second last game of the season when we managed to win 3-0 was a memorable one, and we won there last year at the start of the season, so it is a good place for us to go with a big support, and hopefully we can go and produce again.”
