Wilder '˜always looking to strengthen' Cobblers squad

James Collins has signed for the Cobblers on loan until the end of the season

Wilder has already bolstered his squad this month with the signing of two players on loan, striker James Collins and midfielder Lee Martin from Shrewsbury and Millwall respectively, while Chris Hackett has left Sixfields for Barnet, also on loan.

There’s still almost a week remaining until the transfer window shuts and with Northampton currently on a two-week break from action, it’s an ideal opportunity to bring in further new faces.

But Wilder, who revealed he was offered Jordan Bowery before the former Aston Villa striker signed for Oxford United last week, insists any new signing would have to represent value for money

“We’re always looking and it’s important that we get it right in certain positions but we’re well covered at the top of the pitch,” said the Cobblers chief.

“We’ll possibly react to an injury and I’d still like us to strengthen as I always will do because no doubt other teams will make big signings.

“You look at Oxford with Bowery. I was punted him but he wanted astronomical wages.

“I’m not saying we’re going to do that but we want to get value for money and I think we have done in terms of Lee and James coming in.”

Whilst the prospect of adding to his squad remains a possibility, Wilder is more than happy with his current options heading into the final 19 games of the season,

“It’s important that we keep strong in terms of personnel,” he added.

“Everyone saw that numbers-wise on Tuesday night at MK we didn’t have anything coming off the bench but on Saturday we had options.

“Whether we needed to change the shape with Jason Taylor or Nicky Adams coming on, or whether we needed someone to stretch the game at the top of the pitch with young Sammy (Hoskins) coming on.

“I had those options to make changes and help us over the line with their performances and their ability to affect the game.

“So we have to be strong and I’m sure we will be and I thought the skipper nailed it in the programme - there’s no distractions now and there’s 19 games to go after Saturday.

“We’ve put ourselves in a fabulous position and the players are playing with great confidence and I’m sure the supporters are enjoying watching what we are trying to do and we’re winning games of football which is a great habit.”
