Who's playing and who's not as FA tells non-League and grass roots leagues to make own decisions on coronavirus postponements

Grass roots football leagues have been advised by the Football Association that it will be down to governing body of each individual competition to decide whether or not matches go ahead this weekend and in future weeks in the wake of the escalating coronavirus pandemic in the UK.

News broke on Friday morning that the professional game in England has been suspended until April 3 at the earliest, with all matches in the Premier League and the EFL being postponed for at least three weeks.

This has affected the Cobblers, who were due to play at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday in a Sky Bet League Two encounter.

Keith Curle's men will now be left kicking their heels until at least April 4, when they are scheduled to travel to Crewe Alexandra.

The statement also confirmed that all matches in the FA Women’s Super League and FA Women’s Championship, as well as all academy and youth team fixtures, will be called off.

The England senior team's scheduled friendlies against Denmark and Italy, which were due to be played at Wembley at the end of the month, have also been cancelled.

But the situation with regards the non-League pyramid, from the National League down, as well as grassroots youth football, was left in the hands of each individual league to decide.

Matches in the National League, in which county sides Brackley Town and Kettering Town play, will go ahead this weekend, but the Southern League has decided to suspend matches until March 21.

That means there are no games for the next two Saturdays, or next midweek, for AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Corby Town and Daventry Town.

The FA statement read: "The FA is liaising with the National League pyramids (men’s and women’s) and will continue to offer guidance and support.

"Any decision to continue playing or to postpone their respective competitions is a matter for each league as autonomous bodies within the game."

The statement from the National League read: "Following a Board meeting held today, the National League has decided to allow matches in its three divisions to proceed as planned this weekend.

"The National League will keep the operation of its competition under constant and diligent review, and will remain in compliance with government advice at all times.

"The Football Association has offered its guidance, and made it clear the decision to continue or to suspend a competition is a matter for each league to make.

"The National League places the welfare and well-being of all those involved in and connected to its competition as the highest priority."

The Southern League statement said: "A decision has been taken that all BetVictor Southern League matches will be postponed between Saturday 14th and Saturday 21st March inclusive.

"Therefore, there will be no matches taking place tomorrow (Saturday), next midweek or Saturday 21st March.

"A review of the situation will take place next Friday, 20th March and everyone will be notified of the decision as soon as possible regarding the continuation or otherwise of the competition from Monday 23rd March."

Aside from the county's non-League clubs, there is a thriving grassroots scene in Northampton and the surrounding areas.

Below those clubs in the Saturday pyramid are the United Counties and Northants Combination leagues, while there are also the Nene Sunday and Sunday Combination leagues, the Northants Women's & Girls League, and the booming Northampton & District Youth Alliance.

The Northants Combination have confirmed all of their matches will be on this weekend, and it is the same with the United Counties League.

Matches in the Nene Sunday League will also go ahead, with a statement on the league's Facebook page saying: "The Nene Sunday League are currently taking the Government stance that whilst Schools remain open games will go ahead."

It is a similar story for the Women's & Girls League, who said on Twitter: "The @MacronNWGFL board have collectively agreed to continue all grassroots women and girls games this weekend. A full statement has been sent to all member club secretaries."
