Northampton kicked off their six-game pre-season programme with a 3-0 defeat to Russell Martin’s Leicester City on Saturday. Playing two different XIs for each half, all five summer signings featured, as did two trialists and two youth team players – but what did we learn, if anything, about Chris Hogg’s Cobblers?

9. Flying full-back
If Donacien was the pick in the first half, it was arguably James Maxwell in the second. The left-back showed a great engine to get up the left flank, missing Town's best chance of the second half, and he also made one superb tackle at the other end. 10. Other observations
Harvey Saunders looked sharp and lively at the top of the pitch and should have scored after some excellent approach work, while fellow summer signing Logan Briggs was closely marked by his parent club when he operated on the left wing in the second period. This is also a potentially big pre-season for Neo Dobson. Still only 19, the forward played off the right in the first half and showed some nice touches Photo: Pete Norton
