West Brom loanee Callum Morton has described his first month at the Cobblers as 'brilliant' after netting five goals in six starts for the club.

The 20-year-old, who scored five goals in 17 games for non-league Braintree last season, was an unknown quantity to the majority of Town supporters before joining on loan at the end of January.

But he's become an instant hit at the club thanks to his eye for goal as well as his impressive work ethic. Morton scored braces against Walsall and Grimsby and also netted the winner at Macclesfield Town.

"It's been brilliant so far," said Morton. "It's obviously great to score a few goals.

"I won't get carried away. I think I'm really grounded and I don't get too ahead of myself.

"I'm a quiet lad and I'm sure everyone will tell you that. I don't take myself too seriously at all

"I'm doing well now and my focus is solely on the rest of the season and hopefully getting Northampton promoted.

"Maybe we've been a bit inconsistent with our results but if we keep winning like we did on Saturday, who knows where we can get to."

Morton's tireless work off the ball was rewarded late on against Grimsby when he latched onto a short back pass and poked under the goalkeeper.

"When we play two up front it makes it easier to press as a unit and as a team and it's an important part of the game," he added.

"Obviously the midfield helps out. Macca (Alan McCormack) came back into the team on Saturday and he was relentless pressing from midfield.

"That helped us massively and pressing obviously led to the second goal."

It's also been noticeable how Morton wears his socks below his knees while out on the pitch.

Explaining why, he added: "I got clattered by the goalkeeper when I scored the second goal and my shin's all cut but I don't like having big shin pads getting in the way.

"I like to play with my socks low down, even if it's not as aesthetically pleasing on the eye!

"That's just what I prefer and I'll stick with it until something changes."
