As impressive as the Cobblers were during their exhilarating semi-final victory over Cheltenham Town, Alan McCormack believes they can still get even better ahead of Monday's play-off final.

Town became the first League Two side to lose a home first leg by two goals or more and progress to the final following Vadaine Oliver's early strike and a brace for young Callum Morton on a special night at Whaddon Road.

However, with Exeter City to come tomorrow, and with the Cobblers keen to ensure they haven't emptied the tank before their trip to Wembley, McCormack insists his team-mates must look to go up another notch.

"Belief and confidence are high after what we did the other night and how we did it," said the 36-year-old. "We played football on the deck to open them up to allow us to go long and our balls forward to Vadaine and Callum were a lot more precise and a lot more effective.

"The confidence levels are obviously high but you've still got to be wary of other teams and you've still got to go out and be better and look to improve on your last performance, both as an individual and as a team.

"There are probably still aspects of that game that we could improve on. It's being critical but being the people we are, we want to learn each game and we'll look back on it and see what we can improve.

"We could have won five or six so you've got to look at little things to improve and to strive to be better week in, week out."

On an individual level, the experienced McCormack will not be getting ahead of himself.

"I always try and forget about the last game as much as I can and move onto the next match and then treat that with the respect that it needs," he added.

"I'll go into the game on Monday feeling cautious but also confident. They're a good side and I'm hoping it'll be a good, entertaining game and I think there might be a few goals - I just hope they're all for us!"

Captain Charlie Goode reiterated McCormack by demanding that his team match the standards they set at Cheltenham.

"We're champing at the bit," he said. "We knew we weren't quite at it in the first leg and we didn't get the run of the ball but on Monday we gave it everything we've got.

"We spoke about it and we didn't give up and we all believed and it was a really special night, but we're not done yet because we've got one more push to come.

"There's no point doing what we did at Cheltenham and going out there at Wembley and not doing our stuff. We've set our standards - that's probably our best performance all year - and now we know what each and every one of us needs to put in.

"The intensity levels from the first whistle of the game were there and we know that if we can produce one more push, we can hopefully be lifting that trophy on Monday."
