Former Cobblers midfielder Joel Byrom is one of 22 players to be released by relegation-bound Stevenage.

The 33-year-old spent two and a half seasons at the Cobblers and made 40 appearances during the title-winning campaign. He left for Mansfield in January 2017 before joining Stevenage 18 months later.

Injury has restricted his game-time this season, managing just seven appearances in all competitions, as Steveage finished bottom of League Two, although they may yet avoid relegation depending on the outcome of a disciplinary hearing against Macclesfield Town.

Former Tottenham youngster Emmanuel Sonupe, who played four times for the Cobblers in 2016/17, has also been released by Boro. The full list is below.

Manager Alex Revell said: “I inherited a long list of players, but it has been a poor season and I want to bring a fresh start, a new level of commitment, a new energy and a new enthusiasm to the football club.

“No matter which league we play in next season, I want to work with a smaller squad and build a winning environment so I will be looking to get the right blend of youth and experience.

"I am really happy with the players retained and now want to add lads that I believe will flourish in a new environment. We have had long enough to plan, I know who we want and I expect to be announcing additions to the squad over the next few weeks."
