A tense and nervy afternoon at Prenton Park ended in celebration thanks to Sam Hoskins’ 22nd goal of the season. His fabulous volley after only five minutes was the difference and meant Cobblers wrapped up third spot in League Two and could at last forget the horrors of 12 months ago. Here are our player ratings from a glorious afternoon on Merseyside…
5. Ryan Haynes
Was only right that Cobblers suffered one more injury on the final day of the season. He was the unfortunate one who had to make way before the break due to a knee problem... 7 Photo: Pete Norton
6. Shaun McWilliams
Wasn't the game for midfielders to shine in possession but he got through a ton of work off the ball as he so often does. Committed and energetic and made it difficult for Tranmere to play through Cobblers. He enjoyed the celebrations as much as anyone and rightly so... 8 Photo: Pete Norton
7. Marc Leonard
Been a class act all season long and he rolled out one more quality performance at Prenton Park to help Cobblers seal the deal. He's everything you want from a young loanee and more. Cobblers wouldn't hesitate to have him back... 8.5 Photo: Pete Norton
8. Mitch Pinnock
His corners and long throws led to chances in the first-half and he was so close to tapping in Lintott's cross in the second. He's really come to the fore in the final few weeks of the season to help Cobblers finish the job... 8 Photo: Pete Norton
