Andy Peaks, Andy Woodman and Alan Sheehan, among others, have also been mentioned as possible candidates – but if the club were going to go down a different route, who else is out there? We’ve taken a look...

1. Neil Critchley
Did a stellar job in his first spell at Blackpool, leading them to League One promotion in 2021. But none of his subsequent three jobs - QPR, Hearts and Blackpool again - went to plan. He's highly regarded as a coach though and could be an interesting option. Photo: David Rogers

2. Simon Rusk
Out of work after leaving Southampton. Had two spells as interim manager during his two years at Saints. Worked as set-piece coach for Nottingham Forest and managed England Under-19s. Had a brief spell in charge of Stockport in 2021. Started out at Brighton where he did a number of coaching roles across five years. Photo: Dan Mullan

3. John O'Shea
Current assistant manager to Heimir Hallgrímsson at the Republic of Ireland. Spent time on the coaching staff with both Stoke and Birmingham. He's previously spoken about his desire to be a manager one day. Photo: Charles McQuillan

4. Adam Lakeland
Guided King's Lynn Town to the play-offs last season having come in the previous year when they were battling relegation. Currently has Halifax seventh in the National League. His football seems more focused on defensive solidity than attacking flair. Photo: Pete Norton
