Midfielder Jack Sowerby admitted he was somewhat surprised to be handed his Cobblers debut so soon after half-time during Saturday's defeat to Bristol Rovers.

The 25-year-old joined from Fleetwood Town two weeks ago but a toe injury, suffered earlier in pre-season, delayed his first appearance for the club.

However, he was on the bench for the trip to Bristol and with Town far from their best, he was called upon by manager Keith Curle just 10 minutes into the second-half.

"It's not the start I wanted - I'd have loved to have won on my debut - but I'm happy to have made my first appearance for the club," said Sowerby afterwards.

"To be honest I wasn't expecting to play that long today because I haven't trained much over the last couple of months due to injury but it was nice to get on the pitch.

"I had a fractured toe but it's all fine now and it's all healed and I feel ready to go and I'm pleased to have made my debut."

Sowerby replaced Christopher Missilou and partnered Ryan Watson in midfield against Rovers, a position he's hoping to make his own.

"That's why I've come in - to play games and to play a bit further forward and make one of those midfield spots my own," he added. "Hopefully I'll score some goals and help the team as well.

"I think the team suits my style because it allows me to get forward and help with goals and assists.

"There's quite a few new signings this summer but we're all working hard and we all get on and it might just take a little bit of time for it to click.

"We've lost two on the bounce now but there's no better game to come back and get three points than on Saturday (against Peterborough)."
