Sonupe and Cornell are on the spot as Cobblers reserves see off Cambridge

The behind-closed-doors friendly was played to give crucial game time to those players that have found their first team game time limited.

Among those in the Cobblers team were David Cornell, Paul Anderson, Aaron Phillips, Raheem Hanley, Jak McCourt, Rod McDonald, Harry Beautyman, Emmanuel Sonupe, Shaun McWilliams and Gregg Wylde.

Rosenthal, who 20-years-old and is the son of former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur attacker Ronny, also played, having spent the past couple of months training at the club.

A former Watford youth product, Rosenthal spent two years at Belgian side Zulte-Waregem where he made his senior debut, and he also represented Belgium at under-18 and under-19 level.

In 2015, Rosenthal joined Queens Park Rangers, but was released by the Loftus Road club last year and is now training with Town.

The 6ft 2in midfielder opened the scoring against Cambridge after just eight minutes, firing home from the edge of the box after Wylde’s cross was cleared into his path.

Just two minutes later Cambridge equalised, before Sonupe, McCourt, Beautyman and Hanley went close to restoring the Cobblers’ lead.

Sonupe did just that early in the second half, Sonupe firing home from the penalty spot after he had been fouled.

A long-range strike then squeezed past Cornell to bring the scores level again, before an own goal ensure Town retook the lead.

It looked as though Cambridge would grab a share of the spoils when they were awarded a penalty of their own in the 89th minute, but Cornell pulled off an excellent save to seal the Cobblers’ win.
