Skipper Guthrie keen to earn fresh deal with Cobblers

Cobblers captain Jon Guthrie is hoping to do enough between now and the end of the season to convince the powers that be at Sixfields to offer him a new contract in the summer.

The 33-year-old defender has made 173 appearances across five seasons at Northampton but he is one of 10 first-team players currently due to be out of contract in the summer. He's only played 17 times this season due to an ACL injury picked up at the start of 2025.

When asked if he is playing for a new deal in the final two weeks of the season, Guthrie said: "Of course. Everyone always has something to play for, whether that’s trying to get a new contract here or looking to impress people. Individually, you can’t just down tools so hopefully we can grab some points as a team and individually we do well to show the club you’re worthy of a new contract.

"I’m going to do whatever I can to help the club pick up some points before the end of the season because we just can’t keep losing week after week. We have pride to play for as professionals and we want to give something back to the fans. Everyone always has something to play for.”

Relegation was confirmed last week before Cobblers suffered yet another defeat to Doncaster on Saturday, their ninth in a row.

"It's a really down changing room,” admitted Guthrie. “We just haven't been good enough over the season so we can't have any complaints about that. It was nice to put in a better performance (against Luton) but I'm just gutted about how the season has gone.

"Our performances as a team and as individuals haven't been good enough to keep ourselves in the league, particularly from Christmas. We can't have any complaints.”

Guthrie felt Cobblers produced an improved performance at Luton last week despite ultimately going down to another defeat, adding: "We have spoken about not defending our box well enough and I thought we did that better. We were beaten by two really good strikes from outside the box and that can happen.

"But it’s hard to think about any positives at the moment. We still have games to play this season and we need to pick up some points. The fans still travel in their numbers and we want to give something back to them.”
