Sixfields pitch set for summer renovation as groundstaff get to work

The Northampton Town groundstaff have been hard at work this week as they begin the process of renovating the Sixfields pitch in preparation for the 2026/27 season.

It’s been a busy few weeks for Sixfields since the end of the 2025/26 campaign, with the pitch hosting various events, including charity matches, community festivals and local football, but now the schedule is clear for the staff to get to work.

Brett Solkhon, part of the groundstaff team, explained on the club’s website the work that’s panned this summer, saying: "The pitch is having the top inch of the surface taken off. This will get most of the meadow grass out of the pitch, which gradually weakens over time and needs to be removed. Fibre sand is then being added, which will help the stability of the pitch.

"There are also gravel bands being put in to help with the drainage. The pitch will then be top dressed, seeded and fertilised. After that, it is about putting plenty of water on the pitch to encourage the new seed up, all in time for the Coventry game on July 18th.”

Work is also going on down at the club’s training ground at Moulton College, with Solkhon adding: "The training pitches at Moulton are obviously a little further ahead to be ready for the start of pre-season.

"Those pitches have had a scarification, been verti drained, a top dressing of sand has been brushed in, seeded and fertilised. The Moulton pitches are coming up really well and are progressing ahead of schedule, ready for the return of the players in late June."
