Shrewsbury Town make big announcement before hosting Cobblers

Shrewsbury Town have followed in Northampton’s footsteps by announcing the imminent arrival of new owners.

An American consortium have been granted approval by the IFR and EFL to buy the club, which follows the news last week that Sports Alpha Consortium are set to invest in the Cobblers. The two clubs face each other at New Meadow this weekend.

Shrewsbury, who have not released the name of the group, said: "Now the regulatory processes have been successfully completed and approved, we move towards finalising the remaining documentation and concluding the takeover process as soon as possible.

"The chairman remains fully committed to finalising the transaction and ensuring a smooth takeover process."

Salop chairman Roland Wycherley put the club up for sale in 2024, but several potential takeovers have since collapsed leaving supporter groups to send him an open letter demanding answers last week.

Shrewsbury were relegated from League One in 2024/25 and needed a late-season revival under former Brackley Town boss Gavin Cowan to avoid dropping into the National League last term.

They’ve taken just three points from their opening five games this season and were beaten 2-0 by Fleetwood Town last time out.

“The only people that can turn it around is us,” said Cowan. “We know we need to be better, especially in the final third, but we more then matched them and the effort and endeavour is there. We just need a bit more quality going forward.

“If we get one win, we’ll kick-on.”
