New signing Alan Sheehan will call upon all of his vast experience to help the Cobblers find their feet in League One this season.

The 34-year-old centre-back, who joined on an appearance-based contract on Tuesday, captained Luton Town to back-to-back promotions between 2017 and 2019 and has made nearly 450 career appearances.

After his release from Lincoln City in the summer, Sheehan was last month invited to train with the Cobblers by Keith Curle, his former manager at Notts County, and he did enough to earn himself a deal.

“I’m really happy to have signed for the club,” he said. “I’ve loved my time training here and we have a great bunch of lads.

“Obviously I’ve worked with the manager before and it’s been good to train with the team but now I’m looking forward to getting going and playing some games.

“Keith was a big factor in coming here. We had a really good relationship at Notts County before and I’ve played against his teams numerous times since then.

“It’s been enjoyable to train with the team and now I’m just really hungry. I’ve had some time off but I’m looking forward to getting going.”

Sheehan’s experience might just be what Cobblers need, especially in defence. They are yet to keep a clean sheet this season and continue to pay the price for individual errors. Curle himself said he expects Sheehan to bring some ‘craft’ to the back three.

Asked if he agrees, Shehan replied: “Time will tell. I’ve watched a few of the games and I saw the Swindon win and I thought the boys played really well and in the first-half against Charlton they were excellent.

“There were little things in the game and they ended up losing but I’ll bring what I can to the team and to the squad and hopefully I can help the boys out because it’s quite a young team.”

Another thing Town are lacking this season is League One experience, but again Sheehan should help in that department.

He added: “I think the margins in this league are very small. The game against Charlton showed that - they could quite easily have been winning at half-time and the first goal was huge.

“I’ll try my best to be as positive as I can and do a good job both on the pitch but also off it because that’s massively important.

“I’ll try and fit in and make sure things go as smooth as they can.”
