New signing Luka Racic says he spoke with departing captain Charlie Goode before opting to join the Cobblers on a season-long loan dean.

Goode left Northampton for Brentford on Wednesday but the Bees have softened the blow somewhat by trusting Keith Curle with one of their talented youngsters.

And the rapid development of Goode under Curle over the past 12 months played an important role in Racic's decision to drop down a division.

"Absolutely, 100 per cent," he said. "I actually spoke to Charlie over the last two days and first of all he's a really great lad, but he also said a lot of good stuff about the club.

"There are some big challenges ahead for me but I've already seen a couple of the lads here and they seem like good guys so I'm looking forward to it."

Racic played nine times in all competitions for Brentford last season but with Goode arriving at Griffin Park this summer, he knew his game-time would again be limited.

"It was a good experience to play in the Championship and something I now want more of," he added. "I just want to play football and that's why I've come here to Northampton.

"I didn't play as many games as I wanted to last season but now I'm looking forward to playing here this year."

Asked for a few more details about himself, Racic said: "I'm a central defender who loves to defend. I think I'm a little bit old-fashioned but I can also play and I can play the way the manager wants me to play.

"I spent my youth years in Copenhagen but as soon as I turned 18 I moved to Brentford and I've been there for the last two years - now I'm here!

"I've also played at all youth age group levels up to the U21s for Denmark and I got my first senior goal just before the lockdown, something I was very proud of."
