Plymouth boss Adams says Cobblers were lucky to claim Home Park victory

Town won 2-1 thanks to goals either side of half-time from debut striker James Collins and top scorer Marc Richards, with a late Gregg Wylde strike proving to be nothing more than a consolation for the Pilgrims.

Adams was unhappy with the defeat for his team as the Cobblers drew level on points with the Devon side at the top of Sky Bet League Two, and the Scotsman declared a draw would have been the right result.

“We are obviously disappointed to lose the match. I don’t think any team deserved to win,” said Adams.

“It was a scrappy encounter and we probably had the majority of the chances in the game but we didn’t take them.”

The Cobblers were helped on their way to both of their goals by defensive mistakes, and Adams insisted the Cobblers, who also still have a game in hand on the Pilgrims, didn’t create any other chances of their own.

“We made errors to give them their two goals,” said the Plymouth boss.

“I don’t think they did anything else in the game.

“We had two free headers in the first half from corner kicks and should have scored. We had a number of opportunities on goal in the second half as well.

“If I’m being honest 0-0 would have been right. That’s the way I saw it.

“I thought it was a hard game. There wasn’t a lot of good football and we knew that was going to be the case.

“Northampton have got a head-start because of an error from us, and then in the second half they got an opportunity because we didn’t clear our lines.”

The victory in Devon was a bit of sweet revenge for the Cobblers, who were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Plymouth at Sixfields in August.

Adams was left clutching at straws for positives for his side, and said: “The way you look at it is that we won the first game 2-0 and they have won the second.

“I think we were by far the better team in the first game and I don’t think there was much between the teams on Tuesday.

“It’s disappointing, there is no doubt about it, but we have created far more opportunities than Northampton have (on Tuesday). Nobody can deny that.”
