Out-of-contract Jacobs just wants the best for the club ahead of uncertain summer

Michael Jacobs says he just wants the best for the football club ahead of an uncertain summer.

The 34-year-old has started the last four matches in a row – having made only two league starts all season previously. However, he has been unable to help the team arrest their slide, and with his contract due to expire in the summer, his future is unclear.

That goes for most at the club given the current circumstances, both in terms of their awful form on the pitch and what’s happening off it. A new manager won’t be appointed until after the end of the season, whilst the club are also in talks with potential new investors.

"It's a catch 22 for me because I love playing football and I love playing for this club but it doesn't matter to me how well I play or what I do, it's all about the results,” said Jacobs. “I've always been a team player.

"It's a big part of my game to go out there and work hard and help the team win three points. Don’t get me wrong, it's great being out there, I love it, but when you're coming off with no points and you're on a bad run, it's tough as anything.

"I love playing for this club, it's been great for me across by career, both at the start and again now, but I just want to see it in a positive light and it's up to us to do something about it.”

Asked about his contract situation, which does include ‘various options’, Jacobs added: "I've always enjoyed playing here. The season hasn't gone anywhere near what we wanted but I still love being part of this club because there's some great people involved. Hopefully, next season, regardless of what happens with me personally, or anyone else, we get some positivity back and we start heading in the right direction again."

Th midfielder admits he cannot fathom how the season has unravelled so spectacularly, continuing: "We had a chat in the changing room after the game on Saturday because there are three games left this season and it can't keep going on like this. Collectively, we have to show something from somewhere.

"It's the type of run that you see happen to other teams across your career and you think 'how does that happen? How have you not stopped the rot?' but it's happening to us now and we have to do something about it. The fans are turning up to support us and it's simply not good enough.”
