MK Dons assistant manager Luke Williams was satisfied with the 'professional' way his side beat the Cobblers in Tuesday's EFL Trophy tie.

Stephen Walker scored twice, first after 27 minutes and then again from the penalty spot late on, to take Dons through to the last eight of the competition.

"It was a really professional display from the guys, but we had to work really hard to make it that comfortable," said Williams.

"There were a lot of guys sore and tired before kick-off, and the pitch was very heavy, but the mentality shone through.

"The first goal was important. Northampton have been really successful playing in a manner where they can be direct. We had to stand up to that and did it really well.

"Joe Mason's effort I think was onside, and after that we wondered whether it was going to be our night, but we managed to score and it looked, to me, that if our second didn't come, things could have been very difficult.

"Thankfully, we got the second and it took the wind out of their sails."
