Opposition view: Lowe reveals Plymouth's winner against Cobblers was no fluke

Watts' back post finish was a deliberate ploy

Plymouth Argyle manager Ryan Lowe revealed his team paid extra attention to corners because he felt they could exploit Northampton's zonal marking ahead of Saturday's League One fixture at Home Park.

And Lowe's work on the training pitch eventually bore fruit when, just four minutes from time, Kell Watts ghosted in unmarked at the back post and volleyed home the winning goal.

“We always knew we could get a goal from a set-piece today," said Lowe. "We had worked on it all week – they use zonal marking from corners against and we felt we could get at that.

“If you can beat the zonal, you can find yourself unopposed at the back stick and Kell did that. It was a great delivery and Kell is there to tap it in.

“It’s the work we have done through the week so to win on a set play is pleasing, but just to win anyway and get three points is pleasing.”

Watts' goal was the difference at Home Park after Ricky Korboa cancelled out Frank Nouble's opener as Plymouth moved into the top six.

"We knew it would be a tough game and we had worked in the week with the way Northampton play," added Lowe. "They make no apologies for going back to front early.

"It's their way and that's fine by us but we just had to make sure we nullified their strengths and we focused on what we do. It's been a tough week of training and we gave them a lot of instructions but they carried out the gameplan.

"We made sure the tactics were spot on and we had to be patient and we had to break them down but we came away with the three points."
