Bristol Rovers manager Ben Garner had only one criticism of his players after their 2-0 victory over Northampton on Saturday - and that was their failure not to win by more goals.

Brandon Hanlan and Jack Baldwin scored in the second-half while Joe Martin saw red for Northampton as Rovers clinched their first win of the season.

But it could have been more emphatic for the home side who missed a number of late chances as Cobblers pushed men forward in search of a way back into the game.

"It's been a long time coming but I'm delighted," said Garner. "We've been desperate to get that first win and we played well - tactically we were excellent.

"We dealt with their threats well and I thought we passed the ball much better in the second-half and defensively we were excellent. We've spoken about being strong without being reckless and we defended with strength and intelligence.

"If you can stand up well to Northampton with how they play, then it bodes well for when we face similar teams in this division. The whole team will take confidence from this result. The players have been working so hard, but things hadn’t gone our way until today.

“My only complaint is that we should have won by a lot more goals. We should have been ahead at the break because Cian Harries had a goal wrongly ruled out - he was a yard onside. But in the end we were well worth our win."
