Fleetwood Town interim head coach Simon Wiles saw plenty of positives from his side during their goalless draw with the Cobblers on Tuesday.

The Cod Army had not registered a win in any competition since sacking manager Joey Barton on January 4 and that run continued against Northampton.

The home side began well but struggled to give visiting stopper Jonathan Mitchell much to worry about, and they were indebted to their own goalkeeper Alex Cairns for keeping out Ryan Edmondson in the game's best chance.

Wiles, who has replaced Barton on a temporary basis, said: “I think the positives are that we have again got another clean sheet because we constantly talk about these building blocks that we are creating.

“In the first-half we were a lot more on the front foot, we were aggressive in our press and I thought there were some really good chances for us. We have to keep creating chances and taking them when we can.

“The players are fully aware in the areas we need to improve. We’re always having conversations in ways they can get better at their game and keep improving. I’ll have a much bigger smile on my face when we get that first three points, but that’s two clean sheets in a row and it gives us a good platform to build on.

“The confidence in the players you can see it shining through the backline, it’s not just corners against Northampton, it’s throw-ins and free kicks from the halfway line.

"The boys had to be responsible for their jobs and they definitely showed it tonight and it’s only a matter of time before we start converting and picking up three points.”
