Wilder: Any new signing will ‘have to be a good player’ to get into Cobblers team

But he has also declared that anybody this is signed in the future will have to ‘be a good player to get into our team’.

Executive chairman Kelvin Thomas stated this week that he believes clubs should ‘improve when you are on top’, and hinted that he will give Wilder the green light to sign players in the January transfer window if he wishes to.

Wilder is very happy with what he has got at the moment, and why wouldn’t he be with his team playing some fantastic football and sitting two points clear at the top of Sky Bet League Two.

Paul Corry’s absence due to a knee operation apart, the squad is also currently injury-free, and it could well be whether or not the treatment room remains empty as to whether or not Wilder looks to significantly strengthen next month.

“Things change quickly and we have our fingers crossed that hoipefully we don’t get injuries, because it is key,” said the Cobblers boss. “A bounce of the ball is key, as is keeping everybody fit.

“We have talked about the major players and keeping them fit, which is important, but we want to keep everybody fit and healthy. If we do that, and we have a bit of luck on that, then we have a talented group that can kick on into the new year.

“But if things don’t go our way (with injuries), I believe we are in a position now that maybe we can have a little look and replace.

“I don’t think there are many changes needed with this group as they are playing well, and I think you have to be a good player to get into our team at the moment.”

Wilder has an excellent working relationship with Thomas, and he admits he won’t be making too many demands.

Indeed, he feels they both share the same ideas as to what is needed to ensure the club keeps moving in the right direction.

“I am not going in and knocking on Kelvin’s door after the takeover and saying ‘I want this, this and this’,” said Wilder.

“I know there has to be a process, but we are always trying to improve and we will do that, because I think all the better clubs, and the best clubs, do that. They don’t stand still.”
