Thomas set to give boss Wilder green light to strengthen Cobblers squad

Town go into Saturday’s Sixfields date with Portsmouth (ko 3pm) two points clear at the top of Sky Bet League Two, and six points clear of fourth-placed Pompey.

The are in a fantastic position after a stunning run of form that has seen them lose just one of their past 15 league games.

The squad is clearly in very in good shape as it stands, especially as there is only one player currently out injured in midfielder Paul Corry.

But Thomas is a believer that it is always better to improve things from a position of strength, and he is keen to build on what Wilder and his players have achieved this season to date.

“We have looked at three of the areas of the club that are important to us,” said Thomas.

“They are the east stand, recruitment and the training ground, not necessarily in that order.

“We have had a lot of discussions with Chris on all of those areas, and are starting to put some plans in place.

“Recruitment is one of those key areas, and I think we are making progress on that.

“The reality is, and I have learned this, you have to improve when you are on top, and at the moment we are top of the league and, from what I have seen and have been told, deservedly so.

“We now have to improve on that and make sure we are ready to go.

“It is alright being top now after 21 games, but the goal is to be top or in that top three after 46.

“That was important and one of the first things I said to the players and staff, prior to the takeover when they had put the club in a fantastic position.

“We had to make sure nobody said ‘we are all safe now, we are getting paid, and everything’s great’. That is the case, but we need to make sure we keep the pressure on and we keep pushing as we are less than halfway through the season.”
