Squad men to get run-out as Cobblers arrange Posh friendly

Evan Horwood will play for the Cobblers in a friendly at Peterborough on Tuesday

The match has been organised to get some game time into several members of the Town squad that have found themselves sidelined.

The likes of Evan Horwood, who has yet to play this season, Ryan Cresswell, Ryan Clarke, Chris Hackett, Josh Lelan and Ryan Watson are set to feature against Posh.

“We have a reserve game at Peterborough for the lads that have not been involved, so that is good,” said Cobblers boss Wilder.

“We have enough bodies to send a competitive side over there. so hopefully we will come back from that healthy.

“It’s important that those guys get games as well. We had a really good one a Cambridge a few weeks ago, and we have this one lined up, so that’s all good.”

One player who won’t feature is Ricky Holmes, who is not quite ready despite being back in full-time training.

“Ricky won’t be involved at Peterborough, he will be training,” said Wilder. “This game’s a touch too early for him, but we are still hopeful he be involved in the Yeovil game (on Nov 28).

There are no fresh injury concerns ahead of Saturday’s trip to Notts County, with only Holmes and long-term absentee Paul Corry (knee) unavailable.

The Town squad is one fewer than it was last weekend though, with Darnell Furlong returning to Queens Park Rangers at the end of his loan spell.

Wilder would have liked to have kept the teenager on board, but the off-field issues at the club means players can’t be signed at the moment due to Football League rules, and that includes the extension of loan arrangements.

“We couldn’t keep Darnell because we can’t go and get players, that’s the top and bottom of it,” said Wilder.

“League rules state that when a club is in the situation we are in, then we can’t extend loans or sign players, so we knew it was going to happen.

“I thank Darnell for a great contribution while he has been here.

“He is an outstanding young footballer to manage, and he has got a bright future in the game.”

Wilder is on a scouting mission on Monday night, travelling to Boreham Wood to watch their FA Cup first-round replay against Northwich Victoria, with the winners travelling to take on the Cobblers at Sixfields on December 5.
