The Cobblers ran out comfortable winners in the end but Tisdale’s side played their part in an entertaining game that may have had a different outcome had the visitors taken one of their three good chances.

“It was a disappointing result,” the City boss said afterwards. “I don’t think we were that far away but we were beaten by a more effective team on the day.

“Arguably, we could have done one or two things differently during the game but we didn’t. Northampton put the ball in the net and we didn’t.

“But it depends what your route to goal is, some teams have a certain type of route and we have a different one but ours didn’t work today.

“It was an almost sort of day, clearly it’s not great when you are 2-0 down at half-time and both goals were from balls into the box which we didn’t deal with. We could have done a lot better for both those goals but I’m not going to be too despondent about that.

“Northampton were better than us in the first half but we got more in control of our game in the second half. We had a couple of below par performances but there were also a couple of above par displays.

“It’s happened before at this ground but we need to look at the areas where we didn’t do so well and make sure we don’t forget the good things that we did.”
