Northampton Town’s Tozer keen to ‘draw a line under’ damaging defeat to York

The utility player, who has been a regular in central midfield in recent weeks after spending most of the season at right-back, feels Town were unfortunate to lose the recent away games at Cheltenham and Bradford.

But Tozer concedes the team’s performance was markedly inferior in their loss to the Minstermen, a result that has seen the gap between Northampton and the automatic promotion places stretch to five points.

“I think it was a mixture of several things and one of them was us trying almost too hard to please everyone and not relaxing and playing our usual game,” he said.

“I wasn’t pleased with my performance and a few of the lads feel the same about how they played; everything fell to York, we had no luck and it was just a bad day at the office.

“We have to draw a line under it. In the two previous games that we lost I don’t think we played anywhere near as badly as we played today.

“It’s a mini-season for us now and we can’t afford to sit down and let teams beat us easily like they did on Saturday.”

Just three games remain on the regular season schedule for Northampton, with the next two both away from home.

Tuesday night’s trip to Wycombe is followed by the daunting prospect of a game against a Port Vale side on their own ground and with high hopes of securing automatic promotion.

But Tozer is in bullish mood ahead of the away double-header.

“I believe that we can win the next two away games,” he said. “We have beaten Wycombe and Port Vale at Sixfields and we know what both those teams are like.

“If we turn up we can beat anyone, we were unlucky in the last two away games we’ve had and I’ve got high hopes of the next two.”
