Morris happy with Cobblers outing despite ‘horrible’ conditions

Morris was one of two new signings - the other being Darren Carter - to make their first public appearances for the club after summer transfers, the duo getting a half each in a 5-1 win at Fernie Fields.

Temperatures reached 28C during the match, which was interrupted by several drinks breaks and with the rolling substitutions rule in effect.

But despite such limitations, Morris made a good contribution, showing some nice touches and scoring Town’s fifth goal in a solid warm-up win against the United Counties League first division champions.

“I got 90 minutes in at Novigrad and that went well but it was pleasing to get our first win in this game, that was what it was all about,” he said.

“The lads are all starting to get to know each other slowly but surely.

“It was horrible in the heat. It was hard to get the air into your lungs but that’s what it’s going to be like when the season starts.

“It’s always hot for the first few games in August and it’s just a case of getting used to it.”

Morris lined up on the left of midfield to allow manager Aidy Boothroyd extra time to look at on-trial former Coventry and Hibs player Gary Deegan in the centre.

The 26-year-old Dubliner knows there is still lots for the Cobblers to work on but is sensing the beginnings of a feeling of cohesion.

“I’m getting there,” he said. “Everyone is still finding their feet a little bit and getting their brain to match up with their body.

“Everyone is coming along nicely and we’re starting to get things flowing now.”
