Mixed feelings for Boothroyd after Cobblers’ weekend off

As is traditionally the case for footballers at this time of the season, a number of the Town squad are currently playing through various ailments.

A run of six games in a three-week period - from the draw at Wimbledon to the Morecambe stalemate - have exacerbated that situation but the group were given a rare Saturday off when the Adams Park pitch was too waterlogged for play on Saturday.

Boothroyd was frustrated the game did not go ahead and there was no shortage of conspiracy theories from the club’s supporters, whose own ground staff have ensured every fixture has taken place on its scheduled date this season.

But the rest, the manager feels, could be beneficial as his team prepares for the final eight games of what has turned into a promotion-chasing campaign.

“Nobody can help the weather but I think the postponement helped Wycombe more than it helped us,” he said.

“We’ve got a nice rhythm and some nice momentum going and we’ve got everybody fit and they haven’t.

“We couldn’t influence the decision and we needed to just make the most of it, make sure we had a good rest and it won’t have done us any harm to have a little break with all the games and the travelling we have had recently.

“You don’t want games off at any time, you always want to play and that’s especially true for us with the situation we are in.

“Our squad does have a lot of bumps and bruises and lots of little niggles – a lot of the lads are playing hurt at the moment and that will give those players a couple of extra days to recover.”

The match at Wycombe Wanderers has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 16 with a 7.45pm kick-off.
