Loan signing Cameron targeting promotion with Northampton Town

The centre-back has signed at Sixfields until the end of the campaign with skipper Kelvin Langmead set to miss three to four weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Cameron will go straight into the matchday squad for the Good Friday night game against Torquay United at Sixfields (7.45pm kick-off), in which a victory could see Town go second in the npower League Two table.

As well as being involved in a potential promotion push, the 21-year-old wants to sign off the current campaign on a high note after finding first-team opportunites limited with the Sky Blues.

“About three or four days ago I got a call from my agent saying Northampton were interested in me,” he said.

“I haven’t really played under the new manager at Coventry so it was a good option to go out on loan.

“I was getting frustrated with the lack of first-team football and so I thought coming here would be a great experience.”

While a move to Northampton has its potential benefits to Cameron, it might not have happened had Aidy Boothroyd not been in the Sixfields office.

The Cobblers boss handed a league debut to Cameron when he was just 18 and although he had been briefly restored to the side under Lee Carsley, he was not included in the side to play at Scunthorpe by new manager Stephen Pressley.

Boothroyd surprisingly fielded the centre-back on the opening day of the 2010-11 season and the two have enjoyed a close relationship since.

“He gave me my debut at the age of 18 and he’s been a key figure in my career,” he said.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for him and I think he’s got a lot of respect for me.

“He was a massive reason why I wanted to come here. Maybe if it was another manager it might have been a different story but I was happy to join up with him again.”
