Corry can’t wait to play his part at Cobblers

The Irishman was available on a free transfer having come to the end of a three-year deal at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, and had been training with Chris Wilder’s side with a hope of winning a permanent contract.

Earlier this week, Corry’s 12-month deal was announced after he impressed the coaching staff during pre-season run-outs against Derby County and Birmingham City.

And the 24-year-old expressed his delight at being handed a deal by boss Chris Wilder.

“I can’t wait to be able to get going now,” Corry said. “It’s a relief for myself as being a free agent isn’t a pleasant thing.

“I came in here for a week and really enjoyed my time, I like the way we play, I like the set up so for myself it will be good to get going now.

“The move came through my agent, he had a deal lined up where I’d come here and train for a week or two and play a few pre-season games.

“There were a few other offers but Northampton was my preference particularly with the matches (Derby an Birmingham City) where I could expose myself and get some game time.”

Despite having been with Wednesday in the Championship for three years, Corry is no stranger to the lower divisions in the Football League having played for Tranmere Rovers and Carlisle United.

And with only seven first-team appearances for the Owls during that spell, he admits that dropping down a divison or two was always likely to happen.

“I was with Sheffield Wednesday but I wasn’t playing, so I had to drop down really, but for myself now it’s all about playing and getting an English club on my CV having played the majority of my football in the Irish league,” Corry said.

“This is a great platform for me and I hope to build upon it.”

Corry becomes Town’s fourth central midfield option for this season along with Jason Taylor, Joel Byrom and John-Joe O’Toole.

He is Wilder’s ninth summer signing in total following arrivals such as Nicky Adams, Sam Hoskins and David Buchanan.

And Corry admits that it won’t be a straightforward task to break into the Cobblers starting 11.

“It’s up to me now to make my way into the squad,” he said.

“The lads that were already here did well last season so by no means am I going to walk into this team, it’s about trying to take my opportunity when I get it.

“I remember thinking during the game (2-0 defeat by Carlisle last season) about their style of play, the intensity and the speed of what they did was really impressive.

“I knew when I was coming to Northampton that the foundations were in place and it’s really positive how the manager wants to play, it’s a system that I suit so it’s all positive.”
