Collins says sorry to supporters for Northampton Town’s Wembley no-show

A 23,000-strong claret and white army descended on Wembley in the hope of seeing their team promoted to league one.

Instead they had to watch on in horror as the Cobblers conceded three goals in 13 nightmare first-half minutes to find themselves out of the game with just 28 minutes on the clock.

Town were never at the races as Bradford cruised to victory, and Collins admitted the supporters had been short-changed.

“There was unbelievable support from the fans, and I think we owe them an apology,” said Collins.

“It was a poor performance and they have paid good money, hard-earned money, to get to the game.”

Collins was in despondent mood after the game, as were all of the Cobblers players, but he insists it is still a season the club can be proud of.

“It is still great for everybody to have this day out, regardless of the result,” said Collins.

“It is a great day out for the club, because this time last year it was all about a relegation fight, and this year we were almost looking at promotion.

“It is a bitter-sweet feeling, but we do have a lot to be proud of.

“At least we were up there, and there are good signs for next season.”

Midfielder Ben Harding echoed Collins’ apology to the supporters.

“The fans have been fantastic, but it’s disappointing we couldn’t give them what they needed and came to see,” said Harding

“So we have to say sorry to the fans, but they were great.”
