Holmes’ problem is described as a ‘minor groin injury’, but it has been decided to operate to ensure the player is 100 per cent for next season.

“It is nothing major,” said manager Chris Wilder.

“It is a minor procedure but it is something that affected Ricky in the last couple of weeks of the season.

“As soon as knew that we weren’t in the play offs we got Ricky booked in this week so it can be sorted as quickly as possible.

“Getting it done now means he will be fully recovered well in time to start pre-season training on June 22 with the rest of the squad.”

Holmes was one of the Cobblers’ star performers in the second half of the season.

He initially joined on loan from Portsmouth, but then signed a permanent deal, scoring five goals in 21 appearances.
