Cobblers forward Potter wary of threat posed by struggling York

Jackie McNamara’s men go into the Bootham Crescent clash boosted by their 2-1 win over Morecambe last weekend, their first league win since September 5, and only their third all season.

The three points lifted the Minstermen off the bottom of Sky Bet League Two and out of the relegation zone, with the win ending a run of nine straight defeats in all competitions.

Conversely, the Cobblers saw their seven-match winning run ended as they lost 2-1 at home to Portsmouth, and Potter says he and his team-mates are going to have to be at their very best to get back on the winning trail.

“Before Saturday York had lost a run of games, but they have picked up three points at the weekend and this is going to be a tough game for us,” said Potter.

“We have been beaten by one of the better sides in the league last weekend, but quite often in this league you see teams at the top being beaten by those down at the bottom.

“Everybody can beat everybody else in league two, and it is a long way for us to go on Boxing Day.

“We need to make sure we are 100 per cent and we put Saturday’s loss behind us, but it is going to be a very hard game.”

Saturday’s fixture marks the halfway point of the league campaign, with Potter nearing the completion of his first six months as a Cobblers player since his summer switch from Oxford United.

It has certainly been an eventful time on and off the pitch, and Potter is hoping his second six months in the claret and white can be as good as the first.

“With regards to the team, hopefully it is more of the same,” said Potter, when asked what he hoped would happen in the second half of the season.

“As long as we stay up there in and around the top, that is the main thing.

“From a personal point of view I just want to start scoring some more goals, and exciting a bit more. Hopefully that will happen.”
