Rod McDonald says the hard work starts now after a successful trial period earned him a one-year deal at Cobblers.

The 23-year-old HAS proved to be the left-footed centre-back Town boss Chris Wilder was looking for and he penned a contract on Wednesday.

McDonald had to make his mark at Sixfields after being given the chance to impress in pre-season.

And a series of steady performances ensured the former Stoke City academy player, who has previously played for Hereford United and Telford, would be sticking around for the season.

“It’s always tough (as a trialist) but you’ve just got to believe in your own ability,” McDonald said.

“The hard work starts now and I need to stamp my authority on the team and play week in, week out.

“The lads have been different class with me, they’ve made me feel so welcome.

“Ryan Cresswell, Zander Diamond and Buchsy (David Buchanan) can teach me and Josh Lelan a lot so it’s a decent team we’ve got.

“I’m just going to enjoy myself and learn from good defenders who have been in and around the league for years.

“Hopefully I’ll get to play in the league games soon.”

And when asked how he would describe himself to Cobblers fans who have yet to see him play, McDonald said: “I would just say I’m fast, strong and I like to play football from the back.

“I think I’m quick for a big lad and that always surprises people.

“I’m good in the air and I’d like to think of myself as a big, strong defender really.

“I just can’t wait for the season to kick-off now. It’s been a long pre-season and I just want to put on a shirt and play some league games.”
