Cobblers boss Boothroyd warns Demontagnac he has to change his ways

Demontagnac was shown a red card at Milton Keynes Dons on Tuesday night after aiming a kick at the home side’s teenage forward Dele Alli in the 33rd minute of the game.

Boothroyd was very disappointed with the player and notably the club will not appeal the dismissal, for which Demontagnac will now serve a three-game suspension.

It is the latest indiscretion of a controversial career for the 25-year-old, who was sent off for throwing the ball in an opponent’s face in his final season at Notts County and who originally left Walsall after a series of breaches of club discipline.

But while Boothroyd accepts Demontagnac is not without his faults, he is hopeful the player can change his ways.

“He has done it before and does a leopard ever change its spots? You look to look for the good in people and hope that he will,” he said.

“But he is going to get highlighted now, he has done all of his career, he’s had players kicking him to try to wind him up.

“He will get that because he’s a creative type of player that can do things a little bit different and win you games.

“He can also do daft things that will lose you games but the bottom line with him is that he’s a decent person and he wouldn’t be here if he wasn’t.

“I was disappointed, not for him because he got what he deserved, but for the boys who put in a good shift and played well.”

Demontagnac starts his ban this afternoon when Scunthorpe United come to Sixfields (ko 3pm).
