Cobblers boss Boothroyd tempted to play it again at Wycombe

At the Globe Arena, Town started in a 5-4-1 system with Lee Collins and Kelvin Langmead at centre-back with Clarke Carlisle playing as a sweeper and Roy O’Donovan up front on his own.

As the game wore on, leading goalscorer Adebayo Akinfenwa and Clive Platt were introduced to give the team more ballast in attack and the team built up a substantial head of steam as the game progressed.

Boothroyd, who always plays his tactical cards close to his chest, is considering going down the same route at Adams Park but says the most important thing will be ensuring his side ‘stay in the game’.

“I am very tempted to do something similar to what we did last time,” said Boothroyd, who has no new injury concerns for the game at Wycombe.

“It’s a 90-minute game and it is important for us to stay in the game for as long as possible.

“We know if we do that then we’ve got a good chance of winning it.

“The whole point of our formation on Tuesday was that we were solid and we didn’t give anything away.

“On 75-80 minutes we were still in the game and although we had to chase it I always thought we would score.”

O’Donovan ploughed a difficult lone furrow at Morecambe but earned praise from his manager for the job he did in ‘wearing out’ the home defenders and laying the foundation for the cavalry.

“It’s spirit, fitness, organisation and an ability to change,” he said.

“We had to change our system to bring our two big guys on and that gave Morecambe a different problem.

“Roy (O’Donovan) wore them out and then those two came on and finished the job off.

“We were really pleased with how we ended the match and I think a draw was a fair result.”
