And he knows they have to be much better in Saturday’s trip to Stevenage.

Cambridge claimed a 1-0 win at Sixfields thanks to a first-minute strike from Harrison Dunk.

It put a major dent in Cobblers’ play-off hopes as they are now five points adrift of the top seven with five games to go.

And midfield man Byrom was making no excuses for his team’s display, which saw them fail to trouble Chris Dunn in the U’s goal.

“They came and got the first goal and we gave them something to look after, which they did well in the end,” Byrom said.

“Their two centre-halves headed everything and we didn’t create a real gilt-edged chance, they were all half chances.

“We’ve got to be better than that.

“You’ve got to make your own luck and we didn’t do that.

“It’s been a tough Easter weekend, but the lads have given it everything, but we just fell short on Monday and it’s not good enough.”
