Boothroyd warns Northampton Town fans there is still a long, long way to go

Aidy Boothroyd won’t be celebrating even if the Cobblers go second tonight (Friday) as he maintains a focus on what he feels will be a ‘very difficult’ run-in.

Town play host to Torquay United at Sixfields (7.45pm kick-off) knowing they will move to second in npower League Two if they win and Port Vale lose to Cheltenham

Any potential joy could be short-lived, with Burton Albion playing host to Chesterfield in one of just four league two fixtures to take place on Saturday.

But while reaching the upper levels of the division would delight the club’s supporters,

Boothroyd is adopting a much more emotionless approach.

“We set targets but it’s so tight in this division,” he said.

“Gillingham only just beat Accrington and of course we only just beat Accrington.

“Then people look at our run-in and say our home games will be easy but Barnet beat us 4-0, we only got a draw against Torquay and we only drew at York.

“So those are games we know will be difficult and then if you look at our away games they will be very difficult too.

“Port Vale, Bradford, Cheltenham and Wycombe won’t be easy ones, but each game has its own plan and we have to focus on the next one.

“If we do that then the league table will take care of itself but to go second now and start celebrating would be like going top in August and thinking you’ve won it, it doesn’t happen like that.”
